Clenbuterol in common parlance is known as a supplement for weight-loss. It is hugely in demand by the sportsmen and regular dieters looking for alternatives to weight-loss. It is a non-steroidal stimulant which speeds up the rate at which the body burns up adipose tissues or fat cells by increasing the metabolic rate of the body. It also performs the dual function of not only reducing the body fat but also plays an instrumental role in increasing the muscular mass of the body. It is because of this quality this drug is greatly demanded by body builders and sportsmen alike.
In earlier times this drug was used for medicinal purposes. It was prescribed by medical experts to cure asthma in patients. Later its weight reducing qualities were discovered. But the Food and Drugs Administration or FDA of the United States of America has put a legal ban on buying and selling of this drug in the open market. This was done because this drug has various side effects on humans and its long terms effects are yet to be tested on humans. It is legally deemed harmful for consumption by humans and animals alike.
Cases of food poisoning have been reported where people have consumed meat of animals fed with Clenbuterol. It is common practise to administer this drug to livestock to increase the muscle mass of the animals raised for their meat. Consumption of such contaminated meat can even lead to severe damage to a person’s heart as well as respiratory system. Its presence can be detected in a person’s body through testing the urine as well as semen samples. Many sportsperson have tested positive for Clen because they had consumed this drug second hand through eating animal products contaminated with this drug.
Clenbuterol has been tested on rats for its effects. It was found that rats which were being administered this drug lost their body fat in a short time and their stamina for physical activities increased as compared to their normal counterparts. It also caused an enlargement in the size of their hearts. This was not due to an increase in the cardiac tissues but rather due to increase in the collagen fibres making their way into the heart walls. Collagen fibres hardened the walls of the heart thereby reducing its efficiency too adequately pump blood into the body. Therefore this drug cannot be declared completely safe for human consumption.
